Song title:  WAILAU

Wailau is located on the windward side of O'ahu, Hawai'i.  In the mid 1940's, Wailau was abundant with fish, squid and various other ocean delicacies.  Many families dwelled in Wailau during this time. Together, they fished, laughed, played music and helped each other whenever it was needed and without hesitation.

Lei'ohu Ryder, composer of this mele, uses her style of musical artistry to reflect how Wailau continues to touch her soul; continues to influence a thoughtful and kind lifestyle; and, continues to be a source that shines light on her life's path.

This song is happy and delightful...

synonymous to her childhood days in Wailau.

This mele can be found on Lei'ohu Ryder's CD:  KUKUIPUKA

This mele is in honor of Hawai'i's late King David Kalākaua.  Kāwika is the Hawaiianization of the name David.  King David Kalākaua, who reigned over the Hawaiian kingdom from 1874 until his death in 1891, is best known as the "Merrie Monarch".  This name was inspired by the King's love of music, parties and fine food and drinks.

There was a time in Hawai'i when dancing hula was forbidden.  During his reign, King Kalākaua successfully restored Hawaiian cultural practices, such as the hula that were suppressed for decades.
